Gulp

February has leaped on by (pun intended).

February was Smoothie/Juice a day. I already consumed a few a week and thought everyday would be easy. Well, it wasn’t as easy as it seemed. I fell short and didn’t have one everyday like I had planned, but I still consumed more than I was previously. I feel good. I love smoothies and juices as they are quick, easy and convenient although I prefer them in the morning/afternoon then at dinner or after.

There is a lot of drama going around the internet if juices are better for you or smoothies are better or neither are good for you. In my humble opinion I like them. Sure you miss the fibre in juices and if there is fruit the natural sugars hit ya. The fibre gets blended up in smoothies and doesn’t have the opportunity to mix with the facultative anaerobic bacteria which is in the grooves of our tongue, but you’re consuming more veggies and fruit (I would not recommend juices and smoothies being the only source of your fruits and veggies for these reasons).

As far as keeping up with my January challenge (gluten free) I have reduced my consumption of it, but still have a slice of bread every now and then. I found the most delicious vegan, gluten free bread I’ve ever tried from Silver Hills Bakery. It is called Deliciously gluten free (not currently on their website, but in their store). It is soft, and toasts well. Only con is the slices aren’t the same size as your regular bread, but to be expected with GF. I haven’t noticed any smelliness either 🙂

Here are two of my favourite recipes.

Antioxidant King – Serves 2

  • ½ pineapple
  • 2 apples (I like pink lady)
  • 2 Large handfuls of spinach
  • 2 small raw red beets
  • 2 handfuls mixed berries
  • 1 ripe banana
  • 2 small handfuls of ice (I skip the ice)

Juice the pineapple, apples, spinach and beet. Add juice to a blender and add rest of ingredients.

Green Juice – Serves 2

  • 2 pears
  • 2 apples
  • 1 cucumber
  • 6 celery sticks
  • 1 avocado
  • 2 handfuls of spinach
  • 2 tsp fresh ginger

Juice the pear, apples, cucumber, and celery. Add juice to blender and add rest of ingredients.
